Tigres Down Rayados 2-1 in InterLiga Play

(Houston, January 3, 2006) Walter Gaitan stole a pass in the 82nd minute and scored from 15 yards out to seal the Tigres 2-0 victory over Monterrey Rayados in opening action of InterLiga 2007 at Robertson Stadium in Houston.
Sindey Balderas opened the scoring in the 72nd minute with a header off a corner kick from Jaime Lozano.
The teams played to a scoreless tie the first half. Tigres led in shots on goal 6-4 in that perios including an apparent goal in the 31st minute that was disallowed by an off sides penalty.
The last time the two teams faced of in InterLiga paly, the Tigres won with a 2-1 win over the Rayados.
Necaxa beat Cruz Azul 3-2 in the second Group A match Wednesday.
Two matches in Group B play are scheduled in Houston on Thursday night with Jaguares playing Morelia in the first game and Club America taking on UAG Tecos in the second match.
Eight teams from Mexico's top division are competing in the InterLiga tournament to determine Mexico's two representatives in next year's Copa Libertadores.
Adding injury to insult, Monterrey’s coach Miguel Herrera was on the sideline sporting a big gauze bandage over his nose, along with accompanying cuts and abrasions on his face.
A few hours before the start of his game, he was involved in a car accident that left him with a broken nose and other facial injuries.
InterLiga and Robertson Stadium in Houston will again host four games in the Cope Libertadores qualifying tournament. The games at Robertson Stadium will be January 3rd and 4th with a double header each night.
Monterrey and Tigres kick off the Inter Liga tournament at 7:00pm on Wednesday, Janaury 3, with Cruzl Azul and Necaxa facing off in the second game of the night.
Morelia and Jaguares start off the games on Thursday, Janaury 4 at 7:00pm, while Club American and UAG will play in the nightcap.
The InterLiga final will take place at the Home Depot Center on January 13 following the groups stages.
The eight teams participating in InterLiga 2007 earned berths based on their combined record in the 2005 Apertura and 2006 Clausura seasons of the Mexican domestic league.
The eight squads are: Group A-Cruz Azul, Monterrey, Necaxa and Tigres; Group B-Club America, Jaguares, UAG Tecos and Morelia.
All games will be broadcast on Fox Sports en Español.
